Abstract/Summary An experimental study of single coal char particle combustion at different conditions is presented. Based on the results of thermogravimetric measurements and on the analysis of pore structure development during the combustion, the mechanism of combustion was described. It was shown that the combustion, depending on operating conditions (temperature, oxygen content), could proceed both by the shell progressive mechanism and by the reaction-diffusion mechanism with diffusion of oxygen as a rate-controlling step. At low temperatures and low oxygen contents in the feed stream, oscillations of temperature inside the pellet could be observed.
